CR-2 Visa (Conditional Resident Visa for Children)

The CR-2 Visa is a family-based immigrant visa designed for the unmarried children (under 21 years old) of a foreign spouse who is immigrating to the U.S. on a CR-1 Visa. This visa allows children to enter the United States as conditional permanent residents along with their parent.

What is a CR-2 Visa?

The CR-2 Visa ensures that dependent children of a foreign spouse can join their family in the U.S. If the parent’s marriage to the U.S. citizen sponsor is less than two years old, the child also receives conditional residency.

After two years, the child must apply (together with the parent) to remove conditions and receive a 10-year Green Card.

Why Choose a CR-2 Visa?

  • Keeps the family together in the U.S.

  • Children enter as lawful permanent residents.

  • Eligible to attend U.S. schools and universities.

  • Access to healthcare and other U.S. benefits.

  • Pathway to U.S. citizenship in the future.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a CR-2 Visa, the child must:

  • Be under 21 years of age.

  • Be unmarried at the time of application.

  • Be the biological or adopted child of the foreign spouse (CR-1 applicant).

  • Be properly listed on the parent’s immigrant petition.

CR-2 Visa Process

  1. Petition Filing (Form I-130): The U.S. citizen sponsor files a petition for the child along with the spouse’s petition.

  2. USCIS Approval & NVC Processing: Petition is reviewed and forwarded to the National Visa Center.

  3. Consular Processing: Submit documents, fees, and medical examination.

  4. Visa Interview: Conducted at the U.S. embassy or consulate.

  5. Entry to the U.S.: Child enters as a conditional permanent resident.

  6. Removal of Conditions: After 2 years, file Form I-751 with the parent to get a 10-year Green Card.

Documents Required

  • Birth certificate of the child.

  • Passport and identity documents.

  • Parent’s marriage certificate.

  • Proof of parent-child relationship (birth records, adoption papers, etc.).

  • Medical examination report.

  • Supporting documents required by USCIS/NVC.

(Processing times vary by case and country.)

CR-2 vs. IR-2 Visa
