DV Visa (Diversity Visa Lottery – Green Card Lottery)

The DV Visa, also known as the Diversity Visa Lottery, is a unique program by the U.S. government that provides an opportunity for individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the United States to obtain permanent residency (Green Card) through a randomized selection process.

What is the DV Visa?

The DV Visa program is designed to increase diversity among immigrants to the United States by randomly selecting applicants from eligible countries. Each year, the U.S. Department of State allocates up to 55,000 Diversity Visas to qualified individuals and their families.

Beneficiaries of the DV Visa receive lawful permanent residency, allowing them to live, work, and study in the U.S. permanently.

Why Choose a DV Visa?

  • Grants Green Card and permanent residency in the U.S.

  • Eligible for spouse and unmarried children under 21 to immigrate as derivative beneficiaries.

  • Offers a fast-track pathway to U.S. citizenship after meeting residency requirements.

  • Provides the freedom to live, work, and study anywhere in the United States.

  • No employer sponsorship or family petition is required.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the DV Visa:

  • Must be a native of an eligible country as designated by the U.S. Department of State.

  • Must have at least a high school education or equivalent, or two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation within the past five years.

  • Must meet health, security, and admissibility standards.

  • Submit an application during the designated registration period (usually October–November).

DV Visa Application Process

  1. Online Registration: Submit the DV Lottery entry electronically through the official DV Lottery portal.

  2. Random Selection: Entries are randomly selected by a computer system. Selection does not guarantee a visa.

  3. Notification: Selected applicants receive a confirmation notice and instructions to proceed with the application.

  4. Submit DS-260 Form: Complete the immigrant visa application form online.

  5. Document Preparation: Collect civil documents, education/work certificates, and other required evidence.

  6. Consular Interview: Attend an interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate for final eligibility verification.

  7. Visa Issuance & Entry: Once approved, applicants and their eligible family members enter the U.S. as permanent residents.

Documents Required

  • Valid passport for applicant and derivatives.

  • Birth certificate.

  • Marriage certificate (if applicable).

  • High school diploma, university degree, or proof of qualifying work experience.

  • Police clearance certificate(s).

  • Medical examination report.

  • DS-260 confirmation page and other supporting forms.

Timeline & Processing Time

  • DV Lottery Registration: Annually (usually October–November).

  • Selection Notification: Typically May of the following year.

  • Consular Processing & Visa Issuance: Several months after selection, depending on the applicant’s case.

  • Overall Timeline: 12–24 months from registration to Green Card issuance.
