IR-5 Visa

HomeServicesIR-5 Visa

IR-5 Visa (Parent of U.S. Citizen Visa)

The IR-5 Visa is an immigrant visa that allows parents of U.S. citizens to live permanently in the United States. It enables U.S. citizens to reunite with their parents, giving them the opportunity to live, work, and enjoy family life together in the U.S.

What is an IR-5 Visa?

The IR-5 Visa is a family-based immigrant visa under the Immediate Relative category. Unlike conditional visas, it grants a 10-year Green Card directly, with no conditions attached. Parents entering the U.S. on an IR-5 Visa become lawful permanent residents immediately.

Why Choose an IR-5 Visa?

  • Reunite parents and children in the U.S.

  • Parents gain permanent resident status upon arrival.

  • Immediate eligibility to work and live in the U.S.

  • Access to healthcare, social benefits, and community services.

  • Direct pathway to U.S. citizenship (if eligibility is met).

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an IR-5 Visa, the applicant must:

  • Be the parent of a U.S. citizen.

  • The U.S. citizen child must be 21 years or older.

  • Provide proof of relationship (birth certificate, adoption records, etc.).

  • The sponsoring U.S. citizen must meet financial requirements to support the parent.

IR-5 Visa Process

  1. Petition Filing (Form I-130): The U.S. citizen files the petition for their parent.

  2. USCIS Approval: Once approved, the case is sent to the National Visa Center (NVC).

  3. NVC Processing: Submission of civil documents, financial affidavits, and fees.

  4. Consular Interview: Parent attends a visa interview at the U.S. embassy/consulate.

  5. Visa Issuance & Entry: Parent enters the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident.

  6. Green Card Delivery: A 10-year Green Card is mailed to the U.S. address.

Documents Required

  • Birth certificate of the U.S. citizen child.

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (passport, naturalization certificate, or birth certificate).

  • Parent’s passport and identity documents.

  • Proof of relationship (birth/adoption records).

  • Affidavit of Support (Form I-864).

  • Medical examination report.

  • Other civil and supporting documents as requested.

  • NVC Processing: 3–6 months

  • Consular Interview & Visa Issuance: 1–2 months
(Timelines may vary based on country and case specifics.)

IR-5 vs. Other Family Visas

  • IR-5 Visa: For parents of U.S. citizens (no conditions, direct Green Card).
